The Natural Reserve of the Tagus Estuary is the largest Portuguese wetland and is located at the doorstep of Lisbon and Alcochete. Here, many migratory birds find refuge after long flights and make this region their home all year round. Flamingos arrive by the thousands in the fall for a unique show of beauty and visual poetry.

For over 70 years, Alcochete has been hosting the Green Cap Festival the second week of August, it encapsulates all that is genuine about the town. The charm of the festival and the bullfighting tradition draw in thousands of visitors, attracted by the spectacle, by the display of faith and by the warm welcome they receive.

The estuary of the Tagus River has been rich in fish and bivalves for centuries, both in quantity and quality. The oysters of the Tagus were much appreciated abroad and in the thirties / forties of the last century there were oysters of Montijo for sale in Paris.

Alcochete is famous for its numerous quality restaurants serving grilled fish, you will probably go with the bream amongst the great choice of fresh fish.
